How to Prepare Your Kids for a Stress-Free Family Photo Session
If you've ever thought, “My kids are never going to cooperate for pictures,” you're not alone.
As a mom and family photographer, I know that kids don't always follow the plan—and honestly, they don't have to. Some of the sweetest family photographs happen in the moments you didn't plan for: the giggles, the cuddles, the little personalities, and even the moments when everyone needs a break.
My goal as a full-service family photographer serving Springfield, Ozark, Nixa, Republic, and Willard, Missouri, is to make your session feel relaxed and enjoyable instead of stressful.
Here are a few simple ways you can help prepare your kids before your family photo session.
1. Don't Put Too Much Pressure on Them
One of the biggest things you can do is keep the conversation positive.
Instead of telling your child, “You HAVE to smile for the pictures,” try talking about the session like it's a fun family activity.
Kids can sense stress. If they feel like everyone is watching them or expecting them to behave perfectly, they may become more uncomfortable in front of the camera.
My sessions aren't about perfect smiles in every photograph. I want to capture your children being themselves.
2. Choose a Time That Works for Your Family
Timing can make a huge difference.
If your child is happiest in the morning, a morning session may work best. If they usually have more energy later in the day, we can take that into consideration when planning your session.
For younger children especially, I recommend avoiding a session during their usual nap or mealtime whenever possible.
As your photographer, I'll help you think through the timing so we can create an experience that works for your family.
3. Make Sure Everyone Has Eaten
A hungry child is rarely interested in taking pictures—and that's okay!
Give your kids a meal or snack before your session so they aren't distracted by hunger.
It's also a good idea to bring a few simple snacks and water with you, especially for younger children. We can always take a quick break if someone needs it.
4. Let Them Bring a Comfort Item
If your child has a favorite stuffed animal, blanket, or small comfort item, don't be afraid to bring it.
It can help them feel comfortable in a new environment.
Sometimes these little details can even become part of the story of your family's session.
5. Don't Worry About Perfect Behavior
This one is important.
Your kids don't have to behave perfectly for us to create beautiful photographs.
They can wiggle. They can laugh. They can explore. They can be silly.
I'll give them opportunities to move, play, interact with you, and simply be themselves. Often, those moments result in photographs that feel much more genuine than a perfectly posed smile.
6. Trust Your Photographer
You don't have to know how to pose.
You don't have to know where to stand.
And you definitely don't have to figure out how to get everyone looking at the camera at the same time.
That's my job.
As a full-service photographer, I guide you throughout the entire experience—from planning and styling to posing and selecting artwork for your home.
My goal is for you to spend less time worrying about the details and more time enjoying your family.
7. Remember What You're Really Documenting
Your children won't always be this age.
The little hands, missing teeth, silly laughs, cuddles, and personalities you're seeing right now are temporary.
That's why family photography means so much to me.
We're not simply taking pictures for your holiday card. We're documenting your family as they are today.
Years from now, you'll probably care much less about whether everyone smiled perfectly and much more about remembering how little they were, how they laughed, and how it felt to have everyone together.
Your Family Doesn't Have to Be Perfect
The best family photographs aren't necessarily the ones where everyone is sitting perfectly and looking directly at the camera.
They're the ones that feel like you.
So come as you are. Bring the kids, the wiggles, the laughter, and all the little personalities that make your family yours.
I'll take care of the rest.
